The Works

 

 


 

THE WORKS is  Nik Kershaw's fourth solo album. It was released in 1989.

Two singles were taken from this album and featured exclusive tracks as B-sides.

Hereafter, you'll find a list of all songs from the THE WORKS period, including their different known mixes, demos or official live versions.

 


 

Note that unofficial bootleg live versions or TV performances won't be mentioned in this list.

Some have very poor quality. Some have enhanced remastered versions. Even Bpm speed of a song may change on some collections.

 


 

B04.01 One Step Ahead

 


 

Album version (3:52) (= Single version)

 

Available on the 1989 "The Works" album (vinyl LP, tape, CD and online digital file) and on the 1988 NIK12 and DNIK12 "One Step Ahead" 7" and CD singles.

 

    

 

Note that the 7" single record sleeve and label mention a track length of 3:38, the version on the record is in fact the same version that is on the album.

It is NOT an edit version as one could believe.

 

Note too that the sleeve of the CD single record mentions that track 1 is the 7" version of the song but gives the correct length of 3:52.

 

This version is also available on several collections.

bpm speed is slightly different on some collections.

The soundtrack of the 1988 video clip is the same album version.

 

 

Even though track 5 of the 2022 online only "Extended Versions" collection is identified as "One Step Ahead (Edited Version)", the recording is in fact the album version.

The track has a shorter fade-out.

 

 


 

Industrial Mix (8:10)

 

This remix was released on the 1988 NIKT12 "One Step Ahead" 12" single.

 

 

It is available as track 9 on disc 3 of the 2022 "Essential Nik Kershaw" CD collection.

Live at the O2 Shepherd's Bush Empire 2012 (4:23)

 

An official live version of the song, recorded in Shepherd's Bush Empire in London (England) on September 28th 2012, can be found on the 2013 DVD release of the concert.

Chesney Hawkes - Extra track on the "Secrets If The Heart" Single version (4:16)

 

In 1991, Nik Kershaw was working with Chesney Hawkes.

One of their collaborations was the release of 1991 "The One And Only" single which became a major hit of 1991.

The 1991 "Secrets Of The Heart" single (7", 12" and CD single) featured Chesney Hawkes' recording of Nik Kershaw's "One World" song.

Most of the new arrangements that were used for this version are the same that were used for Nik Kershaw's remix version available on the Japanese release of the 1991 "The Collection" album.

Note that Nik Kershaw may have performed some guitars on Chesney Hawkes version of "One World" though the record sleeve does not mention it.
