Demos from 1989-1991 sung by Nik Kershaw
Nik Kershaw recorded a great number of demos between 1989 et 1994.
Some of these rare songs were given to other artists who recorded their own versions of the songs.
Others are still waiting to be chosen to appear on someone's next album...
A while ago, some demos from around 1989/1991 leaked for a very short time on the Internet.
And even though they were quickly removed, some fans had time to download them.
These demos were shared amongst and these songs are considered The Lost Chapter in Nik Kershaw's career.
Some of these demos were songs that had never been heard before:
Others had been recorded and released by other artists.
Yet, the demos recorded and sung by Nik Kershaw could be heard for the first time:
In the booklet of his "The Complete Picture" box, Chesney Hawkes talks about 16 demo songs... And some of them were probably songs from "The Lost Chapter": "(...) Then my dad had lunch with an old friend from Warner Chappell Music and he played him a song, asking 'What do you think?' My dad replied, ''Well it's obviously the new Nik Kershaw album, right?' The friend from Warner Chappell told him it was obviously Nik Kershaw, but he said these songs - 16 in all - weren't songs he planned but were songs he had written to try and get into songwriting for other people. Dad said, 'Well Ches is a huge Nik Kershaw fan and he'd be excited to hear this'. To his credit, my dad picked out 'The One and Only (...)".
Yet, these 16 "Lost Chapter" demos do not all share the same background story.
1 of these songs was registered on October 3rd 1990: "I'm In Love With My Television".
12 of these songs were registered six weeks later, on November 14th 1990:
"A Bad Case Of Each Other", "Do Like I Say", "I Drown In Your Tears", "It Hurts When I Laugh", "Life Is A Game Show", "Make My Day", "Oxygen", "Show Me The Way", "The Devil In Me", "The One And Only", "The Winds Of Change" and "This Is The Day".
Note that 3 more songs were registered on that same day:
"If I Were On Your Side", "The World Where I Live", "Why Give An Inch?"
The demo recordings of these three songs have not leaked yet.
1 of these song was registered two weeks after those 15 songs, on November 26th 1990: "She's Got A Hold On Me".
Note that 2 more songs were registered on that same day:
"Dreamland", "It's Easy To Love Somebody".
The demo recordings of these two songs have not leaked yet.
"Love Is A Rock" was registered on February 16th 1991
"Don't Mess With My Emotions" was registered on June 12th 1991.
"I Don't Want A World Without You", "Small World"
For some chronological obvious reasons, "Love Is A Rock" and "Don't Mess With My Emotions" couldn't be amongst the 16 demos that Chesney Hawkes talks about in the booklet of "The Complete Picture" box.
When asked about the demos that were on the tape from his father's old friend from Warner Chappell Music, Chesney Hawkes confirmed that "I'm In Love With My Television" and "Oxygen" were amongst the 16 songs.
